En Juárez el pecado más grande es ser mujer.-In Juárez, the biggest sin is to be a woman
FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
TUESDAY, OCT. 12, 4 PM
WHAT: The 11th Annual Rose Sheinberg Lecture at NYU School of Law will be given by Esther Chavez, a feminist, businesswoman, and the founder and director of Casa Amiga in Juárez, Mexico.
Chavez, born in Mexico, founded Casa Amiga, a safe haven for women, in 1988 in response to a string of murders and disappearances of women working in Juárez, a border city of 1.5 million people. Juárez, powered by NAFTA, draws thousands of poverty-stricken women, many as young as 12, to work in assembly plants operated by wealthy corporations. Since the early 1990s, over 400 young women have been raped, sexually mutilated and murdered in Juárez, a place now known infamously as "the capital of murdered women." Chavez has passionately led efforts to persuade Mexican state and federal officials to investigate these crimes and punish the perpetrators.
Obie Award winner, Eve Ensler, creator of the Vagina Monologues, will introduce Chavez.
WHEN: Tuesday, Oct. 12, Time: 4 PM - Reception to Follow Lecture
WHERE: New York University School of Law, 40 Washington Sq. So., Greenberg Lounge, first floor. _
_________________________________________________________________ Rose Sheinberg (1904-1988) had two careers, first as a teacher of mathematics in New York City's public schools and then as a lawyer. Her interest in law was stimulated in part by the witch-hunt of the Rapp-Coudert Committee, which threatened all teachers of radical persuasion in the NYC system. To obtain legal training, Sheinberg taught during the day and attended NYU Law School at night. She received her J.D. in 1950. In honor of her courage and commitment, the Rose Sheinberg Scholar-in-Residence Program has been established at NYU School of Law. N-11, 2004-0509/15/04
