NYU Law School To Host Anti-Death Penalty Conference In Support Of Upcoming UN Resolution

Friday, Feb. 5, 5 to 7:30 PM - FREE AND OPEN TO PUBLIC

The Global Law School Program of New York University School of Law; the Italian Institute of Culture, Republic of Italy; and Hands Off Cain, an anti-death penalty group, will host a conference to secure support for a United Nations General Assembly Resolution scheduled for September 1999 calling for a worldwide end to capital punishment.

The conference will take place on Friday, February 5 at the NYU School of Law, Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South, from 5 to 7:30 PM. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the event. PRESS COVERAGE IS INVITED.

In recent months, the upcoming UN resolution has gained widespread momentum and recognition throughout the international community. Prominent U.S. and European panelists expected to participate include:

Rafaele R. Martino, Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN Dieter Kastrup, Permanent Representative of Germany to the UN and EU President in Office Marjatta Rasi, Permanent Representative of Finland to the UN Francesco Paolo Fulci, Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN Anthony G. Amsterdam, Weinfeld Professor of Law at NYU School of Law Elisabeth Semel, Director of the Death Penalty Representation Project of the American Bar Association Harry Wu, Director of the Laogai Research Foundation Sonia Jacobs, who spent sixteen years on death row awaiting execution before being released from prison.

Norman Dorsen, NYU’s Stokes Professor of Law and Chair and Founding Director of the Global Law School Program, will serve as moderator.
