New York University’s Maison Française and the New York County Lawyers’ Association and its Committee on Foreign and International Law will host an International Cyberlaw & Business Conference, "Conceptual Issues Across Borders," on Thursday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The conference will take place at the New York County Lawyers’ Association, 14 Vesey Street (near the World Trade Center). Advance registration fees: $50, students and faculty with current ID; $100, for members of participating organizations; $175, non-members; $50 additional for lunch. The conference will explore issues facing both Europeans and Americans in cyberlaw and cybercommerce, and will focus on such important concerns as privacy on the Internet, security and export control, the globalization of culture in cyberspace, and cross-border advertising on-line.

At 9:15 a.m. a general session will discuss "The Big Picture: The Evolving World of Cyberspace in Europe and the United States." Participants include: George Sadowsky, director of NYU’s Academic Computing Facility; Richard A. Horning, partner and chief of the Internet Practice Group, Tomlinson Zisko Morosoli & Maser; Ajit Kambil, NYU Stern School of Business; and Richard Mandelbaum, CEO, Applied Theory Communications, Inc.

"Privacy on the Internet: Protecting Consumers Against Corporations or Governments?" will be the focus of the 10:30 a.m. general session, with speakers Yochai Benkler, NYU School of Law; Scott W. Blackmer, partner, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering; Gilles J. Frydman, president, Association of Cancer Online Resources; and Jerrold Spiegel, partner, Garbus, Klein and Selz, Frankfurt.

A program at the 12:30 p.m. luncheon (to be held at Salomon Brothers, 7 World Financial Center) will include remarks by Louis-Michel Morris, Conseiller Commercial, French Consulate; and a keynote address by Marie-Monique Steckel, president, France Telecom North America.

Concurrent break-out sessions at 2:15 p.m. focus on "security and export control on the Internet," with Detective Ted Capozziello, NY Police Department; and Dr. Susan Landau, University of Massachusetts, among other participants; and "the globalization of culture in cyberspace and the preservation of national cultural heritage," with Dr. Sheryl Larsen, Economic Affairs Director, United Nations, among other speakers.

The 4 p.m. break-out sessions are: "Electronic Commerce Beyond Borders" and "Cross-Border Advertising On-Line."
