New York City –The Honorable Don Siegelman, Governor of Alabama, will deliver The Attorney General Robert Abrams Public Service Lecture on Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at 6 PM at New York University School of Law, Greenberg Lounge, Vanderbilt Hall, 40 Washington Square South. A reception will follow the lecture. The event is free and open to public. Press coverage is welcome.

In 1998, Gov. Don Siegelman defeated incumbent Gov. Fob James. In his first year in office, he improved education, encouraged economic development and passed tough anti-crime legislation. He is credited with creating more than 13,000 jobs through new and expanded industry across the state; Honda, Navistar, Boeing, Fiat, Wal-Mart Target and Saks Fifth Avenue are among the businesses that have located plants in Alabama under his leadership. Gov. Siegelman graduated from the University of Alabama and Georgetown University School of Law.

The Attorney General Robert Abrams Public Service Lecture Series provides that each year a prominent public figure who has performed exemplary public service will address students, faculty, alumni and friends of NYU School of Law. The Series focuses on the significance of having all or a portion of one’s career dedicated to public service.

Robert Abrams, a 1963 graduate of NYU School of Law, began his public service career at 27 when he was elected to the first of three terms in the New York State Assembly. He has since served as Bronx Borough President for three terms and Attorney General of New York State for four terms. Mr. Abrams was a national leader among attorney generals, becoming President of the National Association of Attorney Generals and being selected by his colleagues as the recipient of the coveted Wyman award as the outstanding Attorney General in the nation.
