Mala Htun, assistant professor of political science at the New School University, will discuss “Regulating Intimacy under Dictatorship and Democracy: Policy Struggles over Abortion, Divorce, and Family Rights in Argentina, Brazil and Chile,” at New York University’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, 53 Washington Square South, room 324, on Tuesday, April 30, 6 p.m. The event, hosted by the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at NYU, is free and open to the public; for further information call (212) 998-8686.
Htun is the author of Democracy, Dictatorship and Gender Rights in Latin America. This lecture is based on her forthcoming book, which analyzes gender-related policymaking under Latin American dictatorships and democracies during the last third of the 20th century. Arguing that state policies on divorce, abortion, and women’s rights in the family can no longer be seen as a uniform set of issues, Htun identifies the varying ideas and institutional dynamics behind reform.
