From the beginning, the objective for the creative team producing New York University School of Law’s new CD-ROM was to be innovative as well as informative. They hit the jackpot recently when team members learned the CD won two top honors.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) gave the CD its CASE Gold Medal, its highest honor, for outstanding CD in interactive multimedia. Following that, the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) awarded it First Prize in its multimedia category.

“We wanted to make a unique and exciting multimedia, interactive tool,” said Elisa Guarino, director of NYU’s Department of Media Production and executive producer, “one that would reflect the energy, intellectual rigor, creativity, and responsibility of NYU’s highly regarded law school.” Her production team included Brian Danitz, producer and designer; Young Hui Kim, graphic and interface designer; and Jill Chisnell, assistant producer.

The new CD will be used in the law school’s admissions strategy. In the fall, it will be included in every bulletin distributed to prospective students (35,000) and every brochure for the Juris Doctor degree (15,000). Production costs for the CD-ROM totaled approximately $80,000.

Features of the NYU Law CD-ROM: · Links to the NYU School of Law Web Site throughout; · Quick Time movies featuring tours of the physical space coupled with interviews of faculty and distinguished law school guests—President Bill Clinton, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, Boris Yeltsin and Vaclav Havel—juxtaposed with ad-libbed student hosts showing off the campus and carrying their own miniature “lipstick” cameras; · Quick Time VR (virtual reality) Panoramas allowing the user to interactively explore law school spaces in 3-D, as well as a 2-D floor plan that provides a clear interface to the 3-D visualizations of the site; · Full-resolution images of the campus and New York City presented in interactive slide shows and video montages utilizing an isometric map as an interface; · Profiles and photos of all 100 law school faculty, graphs of employment statistics for graduates and a history timeline; · An application form that may be filled out interactively while on-line with the CD-ROM.
