Posts and Patrols

Patrol Types

Directed Patrol

This kind of patrol is directed to locations where incidents have occurred.

Torch Route Electronic Patrol (TREP)

This patrol involves an issuance of a patrol torch to a security officer. Upon completion of the patrol, the information in the issued torch is downloaded into the computer and a supervisor is able to determine locations visited by the officer.

Roving Motor Patrol (RMP)

This is a general campus motor patrol with special attention to locations populated by students.

Foot Patrol

This patrol includes interior and exterior of buildings.

Department Vehicles

  • Roving Motor Patrol (RMP), marked and unmarked vehicles
  • Three-Wheel Scooter Patrol
  • GEM Vehicles
  • Bicycles

Post Deployment

The department employs over three hundred uniform security personnel, with the following rank structure:

  • Inspector
  • Captain
  • Lieutenant
  • Sergeant
  • Security Specialist
  • Security Officers

Types of posts covered include

  • Residence Halls (24-hr security coverage)
  • Academic Buildings
  • Special Events (Dignitary visits, students social events, etc.)

Community Relations

Due to the location of our university, the city is our campus. Our issues, i.e. safety, traffic, sanitation, street lighting, quality of life, etc. are the same as the community's. We interact with the community constantly because we are part of the community. Community concerns are our concerns. We attend community board meetings with local Police personnel to voice our concerns and to listen to our neighbors concerns to enhance our environment and living conditions.

Reports

All incidents must be reported to officers in the lobby of NYU buildings. All incident reports are typed and maintained in a database. Incidents are reviewed to determine if increased patrols are necessary in certain areas.

Monitoring Systems

All NYU buildings are protected by perimeter alarm systems and are covered with surveillance cameras.
