Integrity Control and Investigations

New York University Department of Public Safety Internal Investigation Policy

The New York University Department of Public Safety maintains a professional environment among its uniform and non uniform employees addressing misconduct quickly and decisively in an effort to restore any loss of confidence in our department.

The Associate Director of investigations and Integrity Control investigate complaints lodged against Public Safety Employees.

Complaints are investigated under the following four broad categories:

  • Force
  • Abuse of Authority
  • Discourtesy
  • Offensive Language

Upon completion, each investigation is issued an appropriate finding. Generally, findings are categorized as follows:

  • Substantiated
  • Unsubstantiated
  • Exonerated
  • Unfounded
  • Complainant Withdrawn
  • Complainant Uncooperative
  • Victim Uncooperative
  • Witness Uncooperative
  • Victim Unavailable
  • Victim Unidentified
  • Complainant Unavailable
  • Witness Unavailable

What may result if an allegation is substantiated?

  • Verbal Warning
  • Written Warning
  • Suspension
  • Termination

New York University Department of Public Safety External Investigations

Conducts external investigations where appropriate and or where required in accordance with established university protocols.

Facilitate and coordinate on going communication with local law enforcement and, governmental agencies.

Special Victims Liaison

  • Investigates harassments and sexual assaults with regard to New York University students and staff.
  • Maintains relationships with other university departments i.e. S.A.P.E.S, Office of Student Affairs, and Housing.
  • Assists victims of sexual assaults as a liaison to law enforcement agencies.
  • Links to resources and services.
