An evening of readings from The Downtown Book: The New York Art Scene, 1974-1984 (Princeton University Press) will take place at New York University on Tuesday, February 7, at 6:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at NYU’s Bobst Library, Fales Collection (3rd floor), 70 Washington Square South. For further information, the public may call 212.998.2596.
The Downtown Book, published in conjunction with the current exhibition, “The Downtown Show,” on display at NYU’s Grey Art Gallery and at the Fales Collection, charts the intricate web of influences that shaped the generation of artists working roughly below 14th Street in Downtown New York during the crucial decade from 1974 to 1984. The book is edited by Marvin Taylor, head of the Fales Collection, with an introduction by Lynn Gumpert, director of the Grey Art Gallery.
Participants in the reading, all of whom have lent their voices to the book, include: Eric Bogosian, Bernard Gendron, Roselee Goldberg, Richard Hell, Gracie Mansion, Michael Musto, Sur Rodney (Sur), Chi Chi Valenti, and Martha Wilson.
“The Downtown Show” runs through April 1 at NYU. It then travels to the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and to the Austin Museum of Art in Texas.
