NYU, Electronic Music Foundation Host "Knowing the World Through Sound," Dec. 11

New York University’s Steinhardt Music Technology Program, in collaboration with the Electronic Music Foundation, will host “Knowing the World Through Sound,” a symposium and concert, on Sun., Dec. 11, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., at NYU’s Frederick Loewe Theatre (35 W. 4th St., between Greene St. and Washington Square East). The event is free and open to the public, which may call 212.998.5422 for more information.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
10 - 11 am: Workshop: New York Society for Acoustic Ecology
Members of the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology will discuss the city-wide NY Soundmap Project and learn how to use the Googlemap API to create their own online interactive maps. The workshop will be led by Andrea Polli, Ned Mooney, Michelle Nagai, and Robbin Gheesling.
11 am - noon: Workshop: Steven Feld
Ethnomusicologist and composer Steven Feld will discuss techniques of field recordings in the Bosavi Rainforest, Africa, Europe, and Japan.
1 - 1:45 pm: Welcome and Keynote Speech
Author and performer David Rothenberg will introduce the keynote address by E. J. McAdams, executive director, New York City Audubon. McAdams will discuss the role of the arts in engaging the public in environmental issues.
2 - 3:30 pm: Panel: Listening to the World
Media artist Andrea Polli will moderate and participate as a panelist. Other panelists will include UNESCO DigiArts Portal Director Tereza Wagner; ethnomusicologist, author, and composer Steven Feld; and composer and sound artist Annea Lockwood.
4 - 5:30 pm: Panel: Interspecies Communication
Sound artist Steven M. Miller, moderator, will introduce author and sound artist David Dunn; author and performer David Rothenberg; and E. J. McAdams, executive director, New York City Audubon.
8 pm: Concert: Knowing the World Through Sound
Music by Miya Masaoka, Steven Feld, David Rothenberg, and David Dunn.
