NYU’s Tamiment Library to Present Forum On WHAM!
Tuesday, Sep 20, 2005
N-33, 2005-06
A conference on the history and effects of the direct-action group WHAM! (Women’s Health Action and Mobilization) will take place on Saturday, October 15, at 12:30 p.m., at New York University’s Tamiment Library, located on the 10th floor of the NYU Bobst Library, 70 Washington Square South. Admission is free, but photo ID is required for admission. For further information, call 212.998.2428.
WHAM! (1989-1997) was a direct action group committed to demanding, securing, and defending absolute reproductive freedom and quality health care for all women. The WHAM! Archive is housed at Tamiment Library.
This event will feature WHAM! members and friends who were involved in the group. Featured are two panels: “Activist Legacies: Memory and Meaning in Oral History” and “A Retrospective Assessment of WHAM!”.
According to Michael Nash, head of the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at NYU, “The WHAM! archive preserves the historical memory of this struggle. During these difficult times, the current generation of activists can learn a great deal from the Whammers about organizing direct-action protests and fighting for progressive social change.”
The conference will close with an appearance by the Church Ladies for Choice, an affinity group of ex-Whammers, well-known as satirical songsters.
