New York University’s Hagop Kevorkian Center will host “Iran in Context,” a roundtable discussion on the 2009 presidential election in Iran and subsequent events, on Friday, October 9, 5-7 p.m. (50 Washington Square South/enter at 255 Sullivan Street).

Panelists include: Ali Mirsepassi, a professor at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and author of the forthcoming Democracy in Iran: Islam and Social Change; Kaveh Ehsani, an assistant professor of international studies at DePaul University; and, Norma Claire Moruzzi, an associate professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and director of its International Studies Program. The session will be moderated by Arang Keshavarzian, an associate professor in NYU’s Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies.

The speakers will place the country’s recent developments into the larger context of Iran’s social and political history under authoritarian rule since the 1979 revolution. Specific topics to be addressed include the role of women in political movements in Iran, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s vulnerability, and shifting notions of citizenship and participation in contemporary Iran.
