New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study will host Motown artist development pioneer Maxine Powell, in conversation with Gallatin Professor Michael Dinwiddie, on Friday, October 9, 7-9 p.m., at NYU’s Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts (715 Broadway at Washington Place/entrance on 1 Washington Place). Subways: R, W (8th St.); 6 (Astor Pl.).

The conversation, presented in association with the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, is free and open to the public. In the 1960s, Detroit image builder and personal motivator Powell co-founded Motown’s artist development unit, the first such department at any record label. It was her responsibility to “school” artists like Diana Ross, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and the Temptations on how to effectively present themselves to the public. No record label has ever surpassed Motown’s brilliance in the artist development arena, with Powell helping set a standard for artist training that remains unparalleled in the music business.
