Dear Friends and Neighbors,

NYU is pleased to share with you its proposed design plan for the landscaping on Mercer Street between West 3rd and West 4th Streets.

We are especially proud of this proposal, not only for what it is (a welcome oasis of green along Mercer Street planted with trees and native vegetation) and how it came about (as a result of the construction of NYU’s new, below-ground, high-efficiency, low-pollution co-generation plant, a key part of NYU’s effort to reduce its carbon footprint), but also because of the collaborative process that led to this design.

Thanks to the dedicated efforts and input of all those who were part of the Community Advisory Committee — including representatives of the Washington Square Village Tenants Association, Community Board Two, 250 Mercer Street, New York University, local businesses, and our elected officials - Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects has produced a design of which we can all be proud and which will be used with great enjoyment by the people of this neighborhood. We believe this collaboration and the proposal it has yielded has been very much in keeping with the principles we have embraced in our 2031 planning process.
