New York University’s Program in Educational Theatre will present a play adaptation of Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal-winning novel The Giver. The production runs Feb. 20-21 at 8 p.m.; Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.; Feb. 26-28 at 8 p.m.; and March 1 at 8 p.m. in the Players Theatre at 115 MacDougal Street. The Giver tells the provocative story of Jonas, a boy who lives in a perfect world. In this future world, everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices. Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve, he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Based on Lois Lowry’s award-winning novel, The Giver, adapted by Eric Coble, is a thought-provoking story that questions every value we have taken for granted and reexamines our most deeply held beliefs.

NYU’s production will be directed by faculty member David Montgomery. The cast will feature the talented undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students from The Steinhardt School’s Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions.
