Statement by NYU’s Alicia Hurley, VP for Gov’t Relations and Community Engagement, on Landmarking of Silver Towers Site

“We are very pleased by the decision of the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate the ‘University Village’ site - commonly known as ‘Silver Towers’ - as a New York City Landmark.
“The University supported the designation of site - with its three I.M. Pei residential towers - and testified in favor of it in June 2008. For NYU, our support for this landmarking action is part and parcel of our ongoing commitment to stewardship, which has been demonstrated by our support for landmarking the Brown Building, our support for the South Village Historic District, our careful stewardship of the Washington Square’s North Row and the Mews, preserving the Provincetown Playhouse, and our receipt of a Getty Foundation Campus Heritage Grant.
“We informed the LPC at the time of our testimony that the planning team that was working on NYU’s long-range space planning effort recommended we look to this block as a site for growth by building a fourth tower. We are pleased that today’s action ensures that now, if we do pursue that course, everyone can be assured of a full public dialogue about the project.”
