Gallatin School to Host Ellen McLaughlin’s “Penelope,” Oct. 29-Nov. 1

NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study will host “Penelope,” a workshop presentation of a new play by actress and playwright Ellen McLaughlin, for five performances (Oct. 29-31 at 7 p.m.; Nov. 1 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.) at its Jerry H. Labowitz Theatre for the Performing Arts (715 Broadway at Washington Place/entrance on 1 Washington Place). McLaughlin is best known for originating the role of the Angel in Tony Kushner’s “Angels in America.”
“Penelope” is a music-theater piece featuring McLaughlin and a string quartet with original music by Sarah Kirkland Snider. In the play, a woman’s ex-husband appears at her door after an absence of 20 years, suffering from brain damage. A veteran of a modern war, he doesn’t know who he is and she doesn’t know who he’s become. While they wait together for his return to himself, she reads him The Odyssey, and in the journey of that book, she finds a way into her former husband’s memory and the terror and trauma of war.
