New York University Professor Marion Nestle and the Amygdaloids, a band of NYU neuroscientists, will participate in Ira Flatow’s “TalkingScience Cabaret” on Tues., May 20, 7-9 p.m., at Kenny’s Castaways (157 Bleecker Street at the corner of Sullivan Street). Flatow is host of NPR’s “Talk of the Nation: Science Friday,” a live news/talk show about science. “Like ‘Science Friday,’ ” Flatow says, “TalkingScience Cabaret will give people a chance to talk to scientists and ask them questions directly.”

Nestle, named by the New York Daily News as one of the 100 women who shape New York City, is a professor at NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. She is the author of What to Eat as well as Safe Food: Bacteria, Biotechnology, and Bioterrorism and Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health. At the Cabaret, she’ll hold a conversation with Flatow and the audience, answering the question: “What should I eat?”

The Amygdaloids is a rock band comprised of: Neuroscience Professor Joseph LeDoux, director of NYU’s Conte Center for the Neuroscience of Fear and Anxiety; Biology Professor Tyler Volk; post-doctoral fellow Daniela Schiller; and doctoral candidate Nina Curley. The band, which will perform at “Talking Science Cabaret,” plays a blend of original tunes (“Mind-Body Problem,” “All in a Nut,” “If You Want Your Mind to Last”) dubbed by John Nash, the mathematician who was the subject of the book and movie “A Beautiful Mind,” as “psychoanalytic.” One of the band’s objectives is to increase awareness of mental health issues through promotion of research via music. Its inaugural CD, “Heavy Mental,” was released last fall.
