NYU Shares Its Proposal for 133-139 Macdougal, the Provincetown Playhouse Site
Wednesday, Apr 30, 2008
Dear Friend,
We are aware there has been significant public interest in NYU’s plans for the building that houses the Provincetown Playhouse. The University wishes to fully share its thinking with you on this proposal, which you can find in the attached material.
I hope you will come away from the information below with two clear and firm understandings:
- 1. that the building will continue to be the home to a rebuilt Provincetown Playhouse, and
- 2. that even though the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission did conclude that the building housing the Provincetown Playhouse lacks the historical and architectural integrity required to be designated an individual City landmark, NYU and its architect chose to develop a design that is sensitive to the cultural significance of the site.
The pdf can be viewed here: http://www.nyu.edu/ogca/pdfs/rebuilding.provincetown.playhouse.pdf
It is our hope that the attached provides you with a fuller understanding of the current Provincetown Playhouse site, its history, and what NYU proposes to do there. I think that, in particular, if you look at the enclosed photos, you will see the great changes that have taken place in the building since the time the Provincetown Players were there, and also the highly contextual design that the University and its architects have come up with in response to both the neighborhood and the building as it now exists.
We lay a great deal of emphasis on dialogue as part of the process of thinking through our projects, and we welcome your further input.
Sincerely,
Alicia D. Hurley, Ph.D.
Vice President for Government Relations and Community Engagement
