"Academic Freedom in a Time of Conflict" to Feature Columbia's Khalidi, NYU's Hertzberg

The Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at New York University will host “Academic Freedom in a Time of Conflict,” featuring Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, former president of the American Jewish Congress and a visiting professor at NYU, and Rashid Khalidi, the Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies and the director of the Middle East Institute at Columbia University, on Mon., Feb. 28, 6 p.m. at NYU’s Hemmerdinger Hall (100 Washington Square East).

Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, author of The Zionist Idea, Jewish Polemics, The Jews in America, Jews, and A Jew in America, is the Bronfman Visiting Professor of Humanities at NYU and professor emeritus of religion at Dartmouth. A world-renowned Jewish scholar, he has served as president of the American Jewish Policy Foundation and the American Jewish Congress and as vice-president of the World Jewish Congress.
Rashid Khalidi’s research and teaching encompass the history of the modern Middle East, and in particular the countries of the southern and eastern Mediterranean, with an emphasis on the emergence of national identity, and the involvement of external powers in the region. His published works include Resurrecting Empire: Western Footprints and America’s Perilous Path in the Middle East and Palestinian Identity: The Construction of Modern National Consciousness.
