The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has named two professors from New York University’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences as fellows for 2007, the association announced today. NYU’s Bhubaneswar Mishra and Amir Pnueli were among the 38 new fellows named for their innovations in a range of computing disciplines that affect theory and practice, education and entertainment, and industry and commerce. Mishra and Pnueli were recognized for symbolic computation, computational biology, and system verification.

Mishra is a professor of computer science and mathematics at the Courant Institute and leads Courant’s Bioinformatics Group. He also has an appointment in the Department of Cell Biology at NYU’s School of Medicine. Mishra has developed several technologies, algorithms, and statistical analysis tools designed to attack biological problems that range from deciphering the structure of a genome to understanding chromosomal aberrations and their relation to cancer genetics.

Pnueli, a professor of computer science at the Courant Institute, has worked on the semantics and implementation of Statecharts, a visual language for the specification, modeling, and prototyping of reactive systems—systems whose role is to maintain an ongoing interaction with their environment rather than produce some final value upon termination, such as in an air traffic control system, or in programs controlling mechanical devices such as a train or an airplane.

ACM will formally recognize the 2007 Fellows at its annual Awards Banquet on June 21, 2008, in San Francisco. Additional information about the ACM 2007 Fellows, the awards event, as well as previous ACM Fellows and award winners is available at www.acm.org/awards.
