NYU today announced it has signed a lease for 67 Livingston Street in Brooklyn Heights. The building, which will provide housing for 115 full-time graduate students, is the University’s first student residence outside of Manhattan. It will be available for occupancy beginning August 2007.
The University houses some 900 graduate students, in addition to providing housing for law and medical school students. As with other residence halls, the building will have NYU security officers and residential education support staff on site on a 24/7 basis. A van will provide late night shuttle service from campus.
David McLaughlin, NYU’s Provost, said, “Housing is an issue that is important to graduate students, particularly when they are newly arrived New Yorkers. This is an important new resource for them. We are very pleased to be part of this wonderful Brooklyn neighborhood, which is just a short subway trip to Washington Square. Our graduate students represent the finest minds from top colleges around the world – academic high-achievers who are responsible, energetic, and ambitious – and we believe they will be thrilled to be part of this community.
“It is not easy to find an entire empty building in New York, but it is very helpful when we can: it enables us to put in place the services that students value. In addition, we believe our choice of this building, as well as our recent faculty housing efforts on Roosevelt Island, demonstrates NYU’s willingness to look beyond its Manhattan location – when it is academically or programmatically feasible – in choosing the sites for our facilities.”
NYU has some 20,000 graduate and professional students. Graduate student housing is provided principally to a portion of first-year graduate students to ease their transition to New York City.
