Program Is Aimed at Advanced Practice Nursing Students

The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing is pleased to announce a series of free, web-based, interactive geriatric case studies for use in advanced practice nursing education settings. The case studies, which address subjects such as anemia, weight loss, and pain in older adults, are intended to enable faculty to integrate geriatrics into their non-geriatric nurse practitioner programs. They are available at www.hartfordign.org.

“This project stems from the Hartford Institute’s initiative to address a major health care challenge of the 21st century, the provision of quality, comprehensive, cost-effective care for the rapidly increasing number of older adults, by helping advanced practice nurses to meet this challenge,” says Dr. Carolyn Auerhahn, EdD, APRN, BC, NP-C, clinical associate professor of nursing at NYU College of Nursing, who initiated the project.

The case studies project began in 2005 when Dr. Auerhahn was asked to develop a case study for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Master’s Conference. The project grew, and four of Dr. Auerhahn’s colleagues developed other case studies using the same template.

The case studies can be assigned to advanced practice nursing students by faculty as independent tutorials. Each case study includes an interactive question-answer component. Students who complete the program receive a certificate of completion.
