NYU today announced that it has signed a letter of intent with Tel Aviv University (TAU) to develop a Study Abroad site in Israel. The program is expected to open during the 2008-09 academic year, and it is projected that up to 50 students per semester will study there. It is hoped that “NYU in Tel Aviv” will also offer research opportunities for graduate students and faculty.

NYU’s global presence is among the largest and most significant in higher education. NYU sends more students to study abroad than any other U.S. college or university, and it attracts one of the largest contingents of international students and scholars. This will be the University’s ninth study abroad site; existing NYU sites include: London, Prague, Paris, Florence, Madrid, Shanghai, Berlin, and Accra, Ghana.

NYU President John Sexton said, “We are very pleased to take this step with the University of Tel Aviv. There is strong interest among our students and faculty to develop a Study Abroad program in Israel, and I feel certain that this initiative will thrive in a country of enormous historical and political importance.”

The Letter of Intent signed by both institutions proposes that:

• NYU and TAU will work together set up dormitory residences
• NYU and TAU will work together to establish an academic center for staff offices, computer lab facilities, classroom facilities, and a student lounge. Additional classroom space at TAU can and may be used.
• NYU students in the program will be allowed to take TAU courses as appropriate, and TAU students will be allowed to take courses in the NYU program as appropriate.
• Students and faculty in the program will have access to the TAU library system and other student life resources (e.g., the use of the gym, health services, etc).
