Student Awards

Marshall Scholarship
Tahir Ahmed (CAS '06) a neural science major has been awarded a Marshall to study at the University of Cambridge. This award provides two years of funding for Americans to study for a degree in the United Kingdom.(Tahir will receive an additional two years of support from the NIH see below.)

Gates Cambridge Scholarship
Yael Elmatad (CAS '06), a chemistry major and mathematics minor, was offered a Gates Cambridge Scholarship, but has declined it in order to pursue a graduate degree on an NSF fellowship (see below).

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Kevin Shenderov (CAS '07), a biochemistry major, has been awarded a Goldwater Scholarship. He intends to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. in Immunology. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program bestowed an honorable mention to Dalal Kanan (CAS '07),a chemistry major.

Fulbright Fellowship
Three NYU students (so far) have received Fulbrights: April Gu (Stern '06), an economics and international business major, will study the economic effects of divorce on Chinese women; Anurag Gupta (CAS'06),an international relations, middle eastern studies, and chemistry major, will travel to Korea to teach English as a foreign language; and Leslie Kwan(CAS '06), an anthropology and French major, will teach English as a foreign language in France.

Henry Luce Scholarship
Eunice Park (Medicine '07), a third year medical student with a B.A. in history from Yale University, has been awarded a Henry Luce Foundation Scholars award, which will allow her to study in Asia for the upcoming year.

Morris K. Udall Undergraduate Scholarship
Jeremy Friedman (Gallatin '07)has been awarded a Udall Scholarship, which provides up to $5000 to sophomore and junior year students.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship
Two students have received these awards: Yael Elmatad (CAS ’06) will pursue a graduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley; and Megan Ybarra (CAS '02) is currently working towards her Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley.

National Institute of Health Scholarship
Tahir Ahmed (CAS '06) has also been named a NIH Cambridge University Scholar in Biomedical Research. This NIH Scholarship supports scientific research for a third and fourth year following the Marshall Scholarship and enables the scholar to do research at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Goldman Sachs Global Leaders Grant
Julian Mitton (Gallatin '08) received this grant, which provides $3000 to second year undergraduates to develop their leadership skills by participating in training sessions, seminars, and cultural events.

Freeman-Asia Grant
Two students have been awarded these grants. Angela Liu (CAS '08), an economics and East Asian studies major and pre-business studies minor, will study in Japan this summer; and Christopher Bush (CAS '08),an economics and urban design and architecture studies major and an EastAsian studies minor, will study in China this summer.

Google Anita Borg Scholarship
Kristina Chodorow (CAS '07), a mathematics and computer science major, is one of only 19 female students in the US to receive this scholarship, which provides $10,000 to encourage women in the fields of computing and technology.

Iota Sigma Pi Undergraduate Award
Yael Elmatad (CAS '06) won the Undergraduate Award for Excellence in Chemistry from Iota Sigma Pi, a national honors society for women in chemistry. Every year the society awards only one undergraduate award nationally.
