Edward Sullivan was appointed Dean for the Humanities in 2005.
A professor in the Department of Fine Arts and the Institute of Fine Arts, Sullivan came to NYU in 1979, becoming a full professor in 1991. During his NYU tenure, Sullivan has chairman of the Department of Fine Arts and acting dean for the humanities. He'd previously taught at Kean College of New Jersey and Manhattanville College. Sullivan has also been a visiting professor at Trinity College in Dublin.
Sullivan has expertise in modern and colonial art of Latin American, the arts of the Iberian Peninsula, modern and contemporary art in Latin America, and Caribbean art of the Spanish-speaking areas. His published words include Baroque Painting in Madrid, Aspects of Contemporary Mexican Art, Latin American Art of the Twentieth Century (ed.), Modern and Contemporary Art of the Dominican Republic, Brazil: Body and Soul (ed. and chief curator), and Emilio Pettoruti, with Nelly Perazzo.
Sullivan has received grants from the American Philosophical Society and John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. His Baroque Painting in Madrid was awarded the Best Book in Spanish Art by the American Society for Hispanic Art. He also won the Victoria Ocampo Award from Argentina's Escuela de Administración Cultural.
Sullivan has a B.A. (1971), two master's degrees (Fine Arts [1975] and Spanish and Portuguese [1972]), and a Ph.D. (1979), all from NYU.
