Daniel Stein, Professor of Physics and Mathematics, was appointed Dean for Science in 2006. Prior to that appointment Dr. Stein was also a Provost Fellow and worked on matters related to conflict of interest policies, issues and enforcement.
Prior to coming to NYU in 2005, Dr. Stein taught at the University of Arizona for 18 years, where he was head of the Department of Physics from 1995-2005. He was also on the faculty at Princeton University from 1979 to 1987. His current research focuses primarily on randomness and disorder in condensed matter systems, with an emphasis on random magnetic materials called spin glasses and on stochastic processes leading to rare nucleation events. In the past, he has worked on topics as diverse as protein biophysics, biological evolution, amorphous semiconductors, superconductors and superfluids, liquid crystals, neutron stars, and the interface between particle physics and cosmology.
Dr. Stein received his Ph.D. in Physics in 1979 from Princeton University.
