One of the world's most prominent Art Historians, Thomas Crow joins the Institute of Fine Arts as the Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art. He received his B.A. in Government from Pomona College (1969) and his Ph.D. in
Art History from the University of California, Los Angeles (1978). Most recently, he served as Director of the Getty Research Institute and taught at several universities.
Dr. Crow is the author of many books, including Painters and Public Life in Eighteenth-Century Paris (1985); Modern Art in the Common Culture (1996); The Rise of the Sixties: American and European Art in the Era of Dissent (1996, 2005) and Emulation: Making Artists for Revolutionary France (1995). His numerous journal articles include: "The Practice of Art History in America" in Daedalus (Spring 2006) and "Marx to Sharks: The Art-Historical '80s" in Artforum (2003). Dr. Crow is the recipient of many honors, including a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship.
