If we compare the OOZ goose database with all the other animal language
databases the contrast becomes clear. Take for instance the vocalization
database of the Savanna
Elephant Vocalization Database.
This is also a database built in PHP/MySQL but it has NO capacity for annotating
and is a repository of the interpretive work of small set of observers (4
credited). Others who may have observations similar or differing are not
able to add them to the database, that is the database has a closed structure
of participation. While the website attracts enormous interest, and while
they advertise open use, they do not facilitate open interpretation. From
the website:
"We are happy for any use of the database toward the better understanding,
conservation and welfare of elephants. We have therefore made an effort
to let you have easy access to the information contained therein. We would,
though, ask that when using information from the website you refer to "Poole,
J.H. & Granli, P.K. 2003. Visual and Tactile Signals of African Savanna
Elephants, http://www.elephantvoices.org/what/visual_tactile_signals.html",
or, where appropriate, to the original source material as referenced."
This database, like others can is designed to keep public and research functions
distinct. Open access is not an open structure of participation.
