12. CODESIGNED URBAN ANIMAL HABITATS

OOZ takes the urban animal habitats that animals themselves have initiated as its starting point. These contexts, including the geese population at de Verbeelding, provide an opportunity to learn what the resources and structures that animals themselves have exploited, it directs our attention to the architectural and adaptive innovations these nonhumans have made.

Another example of animal urbanity and future OOZ site is the Sea lions on Pier 39 in San Francisco. The Sea lions moved into some abandoned piers shortly after an earthquake, and have stayed. At first the local businesses disdained them as noisy and smelly, now they are the single most popular tourist attraction in San Francisco. In Austin, TX there are bats. Bats roosting in human architecture is a problem in most of the Netherlands.
