Internships
The Margaret Sanger Papers Project offers a summer internship program which has been in operation since 1995 (see list of former interns). Graduate and undergraduate students from universities in the U.S. and Europe have worked with the editorial staff on our microfilm, book and electronic publications and received broad experience in historical research and editing.
For 2010, interns can select from projects related to our book or digital editions. While most of internships are arranged in the summer months, some can be arranged throughout the academic year.
We ask that interns be familiar with IBM-based computers, using Windows, have good research skills and can pay scrupulous attention to detail. Background in history, women's history or women's studies is desirable. We often have a number of qualified candidates for these positions and evaluate applications in light of the Project's specific needs.
Book Edition Internship
Interns will be working on Volume IV of the Selected Papers of Margaret Sanger, covering the years 1920-1966 and focusing on Sanger's efforts to create a global birth control movement. Interns will work under the supervision of editors on specific topics, tracing people, places, events and issues covered in the documents. The research will be used to produce annotation and introductory material for the volume. Research will be conducted in the Project's offices, using the comprehensive microfilm edition and other primary sources, as well as at local libraries and with resources available on the Internet. More information on the book edition.
Digital Internship
We continue work on our digital edition of Sanger's speeches and articles, focusing on texts written by Margaret Sanger in the late 1930s. Interns will be proofread the texts, add XML encoding, and draft subject index entries for the documents. Interns will conduct research as needed to verify dates, titles, and publication information, or to identify the names of people, organizations and books mentioned in the documents. More on the electronic edition.
Web Outreach Internship
We are also looking for an intern to help develop a stronger web presence for the Project, utilizing digital tools such as facebook, wikis, blogs, and website analysis to draw attention to the project's work and connect with our audiences. For this internship, familiarity with history, HTML and the web is required.
General Information
The project's offices are open from 9:30-5 on weekdays. Interns should expect to devote 150-250 hours to their project which can be arranged flexibly over the summer (generally either part-time for 6 weeks or one day per week all summer). Depending on scheduling and interest, several positions may be filled in each category. Unfortunately, because of budget constraints, we are unable to offer payment for internships, though many interns have been able to apply their work for credit at their own universities.
For those applying from outside New York City, NYU offers student housing during the summer months. Prices vary depending on accommodations and whether or not interns enroll in NYU's summer program. Many interns have also been able to locate reasonably priced off-campus housing. See the NY Village Voice's website for classifieds.
