Internships

The Margaret Sanger Papers Project offers a summer internship program which has been in operation since 1995 (see list of former interns). Graduate and undergraduate students from universities in the U.S. and Europe have worked with the editorial staff on our microfilm, book and electronic publications and received broad experience in historical research and editing.

For 2008, interns can select from projects related to the book or electronic editions. While most of internships are arranged in the summer months, or can be arranged throughout the academic year.

We ask that interns be familiar with IBM-based computers, using Windows, have good research skills and can pay scrupulous attention to detail. Some background in U.S. history, women's history or women's studies is desirable.

Book Edition Internship

In the summer of 2008, interns will be working with the editorial staff on research for Volume IV ('Round the World For Birth Control, 1920-1966). As this volume will deal with Sanger's efforts to spread birth control in a number of European and Asian nations, proficiency in foreign languages would be a plus. Interns may also be asked to work on final preparations for the manuscript for Volume III (indexing and fact checking). More information on the book edition.

Electronic Edition Internship

Interns working on our electronic edition of Margaret Sanger's writings will be preparing transcribed text using XML coding in preparation for mounting on the Internet. Interns will also add subject index terms to these documents and conduct research to verify dating, publication information, and variant versions as required. More on the electronic edition.

General Information

The project's offices are open from 9-5 on weekdays. Interns should expect to devote 150-250 hours to their project which can be arranged flexibly over the summer (generally either part-time for 6 weeks or one day per week all summer). Depending on scheduling and interest, several positions may be filled in each category. Unfortunately, because of budget constraints, we are unable to offer payment for internships, though many interns have been able to apply their work for credit at their own university.

For those applying from outside New York City, NYU offers student housing during the summer months. Prices vary depending on accommodations and whether or not interns enroll in NYU's summer program. Many interns have also been able to locate reasonably priced off-campus housing. See the NY Village Voice's website for classifieds.
