MiKTeX and WinEdt

Information

  • Version: MiKTeX 2.9

  • Version: WinEdt 7

MiKTeX is a software distribution for Windows, which includes TeX and TeX-related applications. MiKTeX is mostly a collection of command-line oriented utilities, and is typically used with a TeX shell/editor such as WinEdt. For more information, see http://www.miktex.org/index.html.

When creating a LaTeX document, you will not open MiKTeX; instead you will open WinEdt. WinEdt (shareware) is widely used as a front-end for compilers and typesetting systems (such as MiKTeX). It is not a TeX system, but rather a powerful, extremely flexible and versatile native editor and shell for MS Windows with a strong predisposition towards the creation of [La]TeX documents. For more information, see http://www.winedt.com/.

For reading on LaTeX, see “The Not So Short Introduction to LaTeX 2e”.

For a sample TeX file and postscript file, download the following:

  • sample2.tex (this is the sample LaTeX source file that you can open in WinEdt)

  • postscript figure (to run sample2.tex, you will need to have this postscript figure saved in the same directory)

  • sample2.ps (this is the finished document, i.e. the results of sample2.tex)

  • sample2 zip file (to download all three files at once, use this zip file)

If you want to install MiKTeX and WinEDT on your personal computer, see this page for instructions.
