Applicants to the Doctoral program in Music Technology are expected:

• To demonstrate a record of excellence in academic performance and a strong commitment to their particular field of study.
• To be proficient in at least one, but preferably more, of the following areas of knowledge: music technology, music performance, musicology, music theory, cognition, physics, mathematics, computer science, computer programming, electronics and signal processing.
• To have a relevant master’s degree completed with a high grade point average (or equivalent for non-US students).

To apply for the PhD program you must complete an application including the following:

• A completed graduate admission application form.
• A copy of your most recent Curriculum Vitae.
• Academic transcripts demonstrating high-level academic performance.
GRE Scores: Applicants are responsible for making arrangements to take the GRE and to have results forwarded to New York University. Results must be reported to Graduate Admissions along with your application by December 15, the doctoral application deadline.
TOEFL scores: for non-native English speakers.
• 3 recommendation letters.
• Statement of objectives (2-3 pages, doubled-spaced): a short essay discussing your ideas for doctoral research, their context and potential impact, and arguing how your expertise and interests make you the best candidate for pursuing this research. In preparing this statement you should identify the faculty member(s) that you are most interested in working with. The name of this faculty member, together with your name and social security number, should be included on the header of the statement.

• Samples of previous scholarly work on music technology or related fields. Applicants must submit at least three papers that best represent their ability to conduct research and write effectively about their area of specialization. Applicants are encouraged to submit published work as evidence.
• If relevant to your application, a portfolio of your work in one or more of the following formats: audiovisual materials (e.g. CD, CD-R, DVD), printed materials (maximum of 8 pages, letter or A4-sized) and a URL.

Application Deadline

Please note that admissions are for Fall only. All materials must arrive by December 15. It is your responsibility to have all materials sent in time. An incomplete application will damage your chances for admission. Late applications will not be considered.

Notification of Admission

Doctoral applicants should expect at least an 8-week turnaround for processing after the application and all transcripts are received. No consideration for admissions can take place until all supportive materials and GRE scores have been received.
