NYU Steinhardt Music Technology attracts students interested in accessing tools, traditional through cutting-edge, for music making. These tools have taken decades to develop, and an international effort by many dedicated professionals has resulted in systems which can finally be used by musicians in similar ways as traditional musical instruments. Just as it takes years of practice to master any musical instrument, no one should expect to gain an instant command of a highly complex technology. Our twelve studios are designed to offer users the maximum flexibility for creative activity, while simultaneously serving as learning laboratories in applying continuously changing technology to the art of music. Our program encourages a creative, intelligent approach to reach the goal of understanding new music technology.

The Department of Music and Performing Arts offers a warm and collegial atmosphere. Music technology students attend classes with faculty who are industry leaders in New York City. Our reputation, faculty, and location provide students with a unique opportunity to develop as industry professionals and to make the contacts necessary to launch a professional career.

The Department's acclaimed programs of study in Music Performance (Jazz, Music Theare and Classical), Music Business, Music Composition (Jazz, Traditional, Music Theatre and Film Scoring) and Music Education provide a rich and valuable array of elective courses for music technology majors that prepare them for an ever-changing music industry and musical climate. Undergraduate and graduate students also benefit from the extraordinary opportunities available through the diverse offerings of a major university in the cultural capitol of the world, New York City.
