GYMNOSPERMS AND ANGIOSPERMS

GRADE LEVEL: 10TH GRADE

LEARNING STANDARD:

Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

This lesson will approximately take twenty minutes preparation time and about forty minutes class time.

TOPICS COVERED BY THIS LESSON:

Angiosperms, Gymnosperms, Pollination, Seed, Structure of a flower, Fertilization

PRE-VISIT LESSON:

Purpose: To familiarize students with angiosperms and gymnosperms.

Objectives:

1. To go over the life cycle of gymnosperms.

2. To explain the function of a flower and to define and label all its parts.

3. Describe the formation of male and female gametes in flowering plants.

4. To explain pollination and fertilization in flowering plants.

Materials:

1. pencil

2. unlined paper

VISIT:

1. Students will need a pencil and paper for the visit to The New York Botanical Garden.

2. Students will be given a tour.

3. During the course of the tour students are required to draw three angiosperms and three gymnosperms from each of the following terrestrial biomes: Desert, Rainforest, Northeastern forest.

POST VISIT:

1. The next day students are required to complete their drawings.

2. Students should include common name and scientific name with their drawings.

3. Drawings should also be labeled as either gymnosperms or angiosperms.

QUESTIONS:

2. Give three examples of angiosperms?

3. What is the female reproductive organ of the angiosperm?

4. What serves as the link between the pollen grain and the egg?
