NY Botanical Gardens: Middle Grades
New York Botanical Garden Field Trip
Pre-visit:
Previous Learning: Students should have some knowledge of botany and how plants reproduce.
Aim: What are the different habitats for plants?
Vocabulary: habitat, photosynthesis, monocot, dicot, epiphytes, biodiversity.
Motivation: Each student will be given a Lilly to dissect, also a handout will be handed out. Identify the different parts of a flower. Permission slips, rules and agenda of the trip will be distributed and discussed.
Development: Students will be broken-up into different groups. Each group will visit all the different exhibits of the NYBG. Each group will be responsible to collect data on one of the distinct climactic region of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory.
Group 1- Lowland Tropical Rainforest
Group 2- Upland Tropical Rainforest
Group 3- Desert
Group 4- Moist Subtropical
Group 5- Dry Subtropical or Mediterranean
Post Visit: Each student will give an evaluation of the exhibits he or she, saw at NYBG. Back in the classroom, each group will give an in-depth presentation of their region of study at the conservatory. Presentation should include all characteristic of the region of study. Temperature- amount of rain fall each year, size of area, percent of land area on earth, types of wildlife, vegetation and eco-system. Did you know segment? Here students will discuss any new or interesting facts that they discovered from their research.
Homework: What were the differences between the forest at the NYBG and a rain forest? (think biodiversity)
