Liberty Science Center Elementary
Grades:
One of Our Five Senses
- Touch
Grade level: Elementary
- Learning Standard:
- Time Requirements:
Preparation Time: 2 hours
- Pre-Visit:
Purpose: Preparation of students
for their visit.
Objective: Introduce the students to one of our senses
- touch.
Materials Required:
The Challenge Booklet, oobleck, Bartholomew and the Oobleck by
Dr. Seuss, bags, various objects - cotton, sandpaper, marbles
Students Learning Prerequisites:
Prior to our trip the students will read various books on skin and touch.
Each student will able to identify the dermis, epidermis, and receptors. In
one class discussion the students will have developed a list of "feel"
words (hard, soft, smooth). Each
student will then receive a mystery bag containing various objects. Without
looking each student must feel each object and try to identify it, then record
their
observations and predictions.
Together a chart will be created.
Example:

In the classroom the students
will have read the Oobleck and made their own oobleck. As part of this activity
the students will have to predict how the oobleck will feel prior to completion
and then compare their predictions to
when they touch and squeeze
the oobleck. Finally, the challenge
will be discussed and what will be required at the
science center.
- Visit: At the center each group will go to their assigned
three exhibits and complete the corresponding questions in their Challenge
booklet. In addition, each group will have the opportunity to go to the Touch
Tunnel,
Touch Tank, and explore
the rest of the center.
- Post Visit:
Extension: Everyone will share what he or she experienced at LSC and
their booklets. Then, each student
will create a touch trail or their own mystery bag for homework.
- Possible Questions
