Grades:
Design a healthy workout.
Grade Level: Life science, fifth grade,
elementary school.
Learning Standard(s):
Performance Standards: Demonstrate understanding
of personal health. Demonstrates
understanding of characteristics of organisms. Scientific Tools and Technology: Uses
technology and tools to gather
data and extend the senses. New
York State Standards for Math, Science, and Technology: Students
describe the factors that help promote good health and growth in humans.
Time Requirements:
Prep time: two weeks prior to attending the center.
Time at the center: Two hours.
Topics covered by this lesson:
This lesson will cover the following
topics on how to help our body stay healthy.
1. health
2. exercise
3. human body and its systems
4. use of technology to achieve healthy results and gains
Previsit:(what we would have
covered prior to going to the exhibit)
Purpose: To explore the systems
the make our bodies and what we need to do in order to keep our bodies functioning
optimally.
Objective: To have students
use the concepts we have identified and defined in class while learning how
our body works and how exercise keeps us healthy. Students will observe models
and technological tools within
Liberty Science Center exhibits.
Materials: Writing instrument
and the worksheet, provided by Liberty Science Center titles Design a Healthy
Workout, distributed at the Center.
Learning Prerequisites: Basic
understanding of vocabulary discussed. Students will be expected to apply
their acquired information on our body, health, exercise and technology.
Visit:
While at the exhibit/lab students will
be separated into groups . Students will be required to visit the living room,
endurance, EKG, and the rock wall and record how these exhibits inform their
challenge of developing a healthy workout. Students will be required to use
at least two technological instruments and gather information on how it is
related to our discussions of our bodies function and what we need to do to
keep it healthy through exercise and proper diet. Students will be given two
hours to collect necessary data.
Post visit:
Students will share information gathered
from the exhibits and ultimately design a healthy workout that exercises and
proper diet for all parts of our body. Students will be expected to explain
which parts of our body benefit the most from the exercise regiment they develop.
