Liberty Science Center 9th Grade:

Earth Sciences

 

Previsit: Liberty Science Center
Previous Learning: Student will have some knowledge on various topics in  Earth Sciences: gravity, erosion, geology, weathering.
Aim: What is the ecosystem of our area rivers?
Vocabulary- delta, sound, lagoon, chemical and physical weathering, deposition, old river, new river, land forms, and climax.
Motivation: Students will be shown a map of the different rivers in New York and New Jersey. Flyers and information about the field trip will be discussed and distributed.
Development: Students will be placed into groups and tour the exhibits of the LSC. Each group will be responsible for information on the following exhibits.
Group 1- The Bug Zoo- identify each of the bugs on exhibit- their habitat- how they interact in their environment, life span, etc.
Group 2- The Sense Exhibit- identify the different senses, how they work, and how we match up to those in At the bug world@.
Groups 3 & 4- Steam Table Model- will concentrate on the steam table model.

They will collectively research each of the New Jersey rivers featured. The level of pollution within each river, the industries that are causing the pollution, geographical location, length, the types of erosion to each river, and the ecology of the river.
 - a comparison of these rivers with one river from our area. ( the Bronx River)
Post Visit: Students and chaperone will do evaluation of the visit to the LSC. Students will present all findings to class and guests.
Homework: What did you think about the Imax at LSC?
