Liberty Science Center 11th Grade:

All About Light

Grade Levels: 11th grade physics

Learning Standard: Standard 1, 2, 5, 6, and 7.

Time Requirements: 1 full day at The Liberty Science Center.

Topics Covered by This Lesson: Light, Diffraction, Lenses, Lasers, Bridges, and Buildings.

Pre-Visit: These topics could have already been covered or this could serve as a good introduction to these topics.

Visit:

Teams of three students should build using both the smaller and larger earthquake simulators a bridge.

Each team will compete to build the tallest bridge that can withstand the earthquake.

Each team will also be required to finish diagrams of both light in convex and concave lenses.

Teams will also use a combination of Lucite blocks to demonstrate the diffraction of light.

Using the photoelectric plate, students will describe using a (qualitative) graph to describe the energy given off by a light.

Post Visit: None.

Possible questions that may be brought up: Questions may be used to introduce a topic or questions may be more in depth if the topics have already been covered.
