Independent Site Visits 9th Grade
The Changing Face of Women’s Health Exhibit @ NY Hall of Science
Grade Levels: 9-12
Learning Standards: Health Standard 2, 6, 9, & 16
Time Requirements: Approximately 1-hour preparation time and 2 hours class time
Topics Covered by this Lesson: The Changing Face of Women’s Health included prevention, risks, control and body image. Crucial issues such as breast health, osteoporosis, menopause, sexually transmitted diseases, smoking and puberty.
Pre-Visit:
Purpose: To gain more knowledge about some of the body diseases such as breast cancer, heart disease, sexually transmitted diseases and osteoporosis. To discuss prevention of these diseases.
Objective: Students will write their definition of health. They will write an essay on a person who demonstrates their ideal image of health.
Materials Required: student journals, paper, pens/pencil, classroom blackboard, encyclopedias, internet (optional)
Student Learning Prerequisites: Research information on diseases discussed in the purpose.
Vocabulary: physique, anatomy, mammogram, osteoporosis, and cholesterol
Visit: Students will review NY Hall of Science exhibit on “The Changing Face of Women’s Health”. They will have decided in the previous lesson the groups in which they will be participating. They will have notebooks and pencils. The groups will have specific assignments. They will ask questions of the tour coordinator. After getting as much information as possible on their topic, they will review the rest of the exhibit.
Post-Visit:
Assessment: Each group will present their findings to the big group. They will answer questions from the group. Each group will make a poster on their topic.
Extensions and suggested Homework Assignments: Students will rewrite their essay on a person who demonstrates their ideal image of health. They will compare the two essays.
