Independent Site Visits 7th Grade:
Exploring Technology at SonyWonder ©
7-12th grade science students interested in technology
NYS Standards 1, 4, 6, and 7.
This Lesson is intended to be an exploration of audio and visual technology. Students should get a more comprehensive understanding of the practical applications of and the scientific concepts underlying modern technology.
= Approximately ½ hour Class Time and 2-3 hours for the Post-Visit Assignment.
Since the Visit encompasses a rather broad spectrum, the pre-Visit will be geared toward discussing the science behind common devices such as televisions, transistor radios, computers, etc. The students will be informed of SonyWonder’s layout so as to facilitate their exploration and understand what they are expected to accomplish.
Since SonyWonder provides a printout of activities that were successfully completed, students will be expected to complete at least ten different activities, employing a wide range of audio and visual technologies. Students will also be instructed to pay particularly close attention to one audio and one visual technology for the purposes of the post-visit assignment.
Students will be required to submit to 2 one-page reports on 1 audio and 1 video technology encountered and practically employed at SonyWonder. This report should include 1) how the technology was used 2) the scientific basis behind it, 3) its meaning to society, and 4) any proposed future developments related to such technology. Students should seek outside references in order to provide a comprehensive discussion of their selections.
