Independent Site Visits 10th Grade:

 

AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY:HUMAN EVOLUTION

GRADE LEVEL:   10TH GRADE

LEARNING STANDARD:

Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

TIME REQUIREMENTS:

This lesson will approximately take twenty minutes preparation time and  about forty minutes class time.

TOPICS COVERED BY THIS LESSON:

Australopithecus, Neanderthals, Cro-Magnon, Anthropology, Homo habilis, Homo erectus

PRE-VISIT LESSON:

            Purpose:     

                                    To familiarize students with human evolution.

            Objectives: 

1.    To define characteristics that distinguish humans from other primates

2.    To describe characteristics of Australopithecus, Homo habilis and Homo erectus.

3.    To compare and contrast modern humans, Cro-Magnon,  and Neanderthals.

Materials:

1.    pencil

2.    activity packet

VISIT:

1.    Students will need a pencil for the visit to the museum.

2.    Students will be going to the Human Biology and Evolution Exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History.

3.    Students will be required to complete the packet submitted with this lesson.  The packet contains questions that go along with the exhibit.

POST VISIT:

1.    The next day a review of the correct answers to the packet will be given.
