Independent
Site Visits 10th Grade:
Rose
Center for Earth and Space
Grade Level: 10 to 12
Learning Standard: SAT II to
AP
Time Requirements: 1 period
pre-visit preparation, 1 period post visit analysis and
1 period post visit presentation of research
Topics Covered: Evolution of the Universe, galaxy formation,
stellar processes, media elements
Pre-Visit:
The purpose of this trip is to enhance students' perceptions of their place in
the universe. Students should emerge with an expanded understanding of the
cosmic details beyond the solar system.
Students have an understanding of physical science and solar system
astronomy. Through discussion
probe students' current knowledge of cosmology.
Introduce the concepts of cosmic time and distance scales. Present pictures
(overhead or handout) of a cluster of galaxies and elicit analysis of the
objects. Review physics concepts
that may be applied on cosmic scales, such
as gravitation, centripetal force, Newton's Laws of Motion. Instruct clearly our expectations for
the Planetarium trip
including worksheets to be completed and logistics.
Visit:
Visit begins with the Space Show, followed by the Big Bang Experience and the
Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway. Students complete worksheet on the Universe and
Galaxies, then research a specific cosmic object or topic
on the ground floor. If time
permits a visit to the Hall of Planet Earth could be scheduled.
Post Visit:
Discuss the presentation of our
"cosmic address" to reinforce our place in the scale of the universe.
Invite discussion about the use of media in the space center presentation:
music, popular actors, repetition of themes.
Revisit and expand the study of physics concepts related to the presentation
such as red shift, nuclear fusion, stellar nucleosynthesis, escape velocity.
Homework: Brief research of a
one of a number of related topics such as :
The Hubble
Space Telescope
Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
Gravitational Lenses
Expansion of the universe
Assessment
: Submission of the worksheet
and research paper, together with participation in discussion and presentation
of research findings.
