Independent Site Visits 10th Grade:

 

Grade Levels: 10th grade biology

Learning Standard: Standard 2, 4, 5, and 7.

Time Requirements: 1 day for field trip and at least one class period.

Topics Covered by This Lesson: DNA

Pre-Visit:

1)    Students should have already covered this part in the Regents curriculum.

2)    Students should also be aware of the historical development of DNA research.

Visit:

1)    Students will do the DNA Restriction Analysis lab at Cold Spring Harbor Lab.

2)    Extra time can be used to tour the lab grounds and see other projects.

Post Visit:

1)    There should be a class discussion of some of the historical development of DNA research, centered mostly on what research was and has been done at CSHL.

2)    Students should also discuss how DNA Restriction Analysis is used today.

3)    Discussion on the Nobel Laureates who have worked at the lab.

Possible questions that may be brought up: Students may wish to know more about how DNA Restriction Analysis is used, or more specific information about some of the research done or being done at CSHL.  Students may also be interested in the history of the lab.  Students can be directed to the CSHL web page at www.cshl.org.
