BELUGA WHALES

GRADE LEVEL: 10TH GRADE

LEARNING STANDARD:

Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science.

TIME REQUIREMENTS: This lesson will approximately take about 20 minutes preparation time.

TOPICS COVERED BY THIS LESSON: Beluga whales

            Materials:

1.     paper

2.     pencil

VISIT:

Purpose:     To familiarize students with whales especially Beluga whales.

Objectives:

To give the scientific name and the common of Beluga whales

To give examples of species that are similar to Beluga whales.

To identify minimal identification characteristics that Beluga whales have.

To explain in detail the life cycle of a Beluga whale.

To include the stages and the duration of each stage.

To explain reproductive behavior in Beluga whales.

To give the range and distribution of Beluga whales in the world

To identify the diet and eating habits of Beluga whales.

To explain how Beluga whales communicate.

           

POST VISIT:

1.     The next day students are required to begin working on a three to five page report on whales.

2.     Students may pick any type of whale but they must include

All the topics mentioned in the visit objectives.
