Beach Ecology

 

Grade Levels: 7th grade life science

Learning Standard: Standard 1, 5, and 7.

Time Requirements: 1 full day and 1 class period.

Topics Covered by This Lesson: Beach ecology and general aquatic life.

Pre-Visit: Background information should be covered in the classroom prior to the fieldtrip.

Visit:

Students will participate in the workshop on beach ecology.

Students will then be allowed to separate into smaller groups and tour the entire aquarium.

Students will write down which exhibit/activity they enjoyed the most and what they learned from it.

Post Visit: A classroom discussion should follow to allow students to discuss what was learned and what parts each student enjoyed most.

Possible questions that may be brought up: Students may have questions about the exhibits. Teachers should know background information on beach ecology, sharks, sea horses, seals, walruses, dolphins, whales, penguins, and the Hudson River.
