Contracts, Opportunities, and Expectations

All Liberal Studies full-time faculty hold renewable full-time term contracts, normally initially at the Clinical Assistant Professor level. Faculty may later stand for promotion to Clinical Associate and Clinical Professor. There is no limit to the number of times a contract may be renewed. The initial contract runs three years; upon promotion to Clinical Associate Professor, faculty are eligible for five-year contracts. The contract renewal process includes review by an FAS faculty committee, the Dean of Liberal Studies, and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science; it emphasizes excellence in teaching, professional activity and service, as well as peer recognition in the relevant field.

Faculty in all areas normally teach three classes per semester; class size is normally limited to 25 in core classes (15 in Writing) and 20 or fewer in upper-division courses. All faculty are eligible to teach any GLS upper division course for which they submit a successful proposal.

Liberal Studies emphasizes high-quality teaching; faculty also are expected to remain engaged in their fields of expertise, to advise undergraduates, and to contribute service to Liberal Studies and to the University. Liberal Studies offers competitive internal grant programs to support scholarly and curricular projects.  LS faculty are eligible to apply for University-wide and most national awards; recent national awards include Fulbrights and NEH grants.
