Using the GAF

The GAF may only be used by those who have undergone our training program and have explicitly been given permission to use the equipment.

Labs have been assigned default days for using the equipment:

Wed., Sat.:                   Fitch lab (ext. 8-8253)
All other weekdays:     Disotell lab (ext. 8-8577)
Sun.: please sign up on the Message Board.

Although these are default days, users should post to the Message Board. if they do not intend to use their default day!  Users who wish to exploit the empty spot must still sign up using the Message Board.

CHECK THE MESSAGE BOARD before using the GAF!  Not only might someone have signed up before you, but someone may wish to run some samples on your gel if you have extra lanes.

USE THE MESSAGE BOARD to advertise extra lanes available on your gel or to request lanes on someone else's gel, especially if you only have a few samples to run.  The most efficient use of the facility is to fill up those gels!

For other NYU labs that wish to have samples run on gels, there are several options:

  1. Leave a message on the Message Board with a request to run samples on someone else's gel.
  2. Directly contact a lab running a gel on a particular day and ask if extra lanes are available.
  3. If you wish to pay for sequencing (which we normally do NOT do) and if this is your only option, please contact Dr. Fitch.

THE LOG BOOKS MUST BE FASTIDIOUSLY MAINTAINED and updated with accurate information about each run.  Not only must you sign up on the Message Board to use the machine, you MUST RECORD YOUR USAGE IN THE LOG BOOKS!

Maintenance of the GAF

Each lab is responsible for its own combs!

With regard to other equipment, users are responsible for meticulously maintaining the GAF in pristine condition.  Otherwise, users will be charged a clean-up fee (see Price Schedule).  For example:

  1. Glass plates must be thoroughly washed and rinsed with deionized water after each use, then drip-dried in the racks.
  2. All other gel-pouring equipment must be rinsed thoroughly with deionized water after each use and drip-dried in the racks.
  3. The ABI 377 must be wiped clean of any residues after each use.

Contact Drs. Fitch or Disotell if any of the instruments need to serviced or if there is any problem with the equipment. ALSO LOG PROBLEMS INTO THE LOG BOOK.

Breakage and maltreatment of equipment

Users are responsible for reporting all breakages or events of maltreatment to Drs. Fitch or Disotell.  Users responsible for breakages will be charged directly for replacement.  Contact Drs. Fitch or Disotell for estimates of costs of equipment.

Paying for usage of the GAF

All costs of materials and supplies are picked up directly by users.
