About Us

The National Commission on Asian American and Pacific Islander Research in Education (CARE) identifies and examines key issues affecting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) access and success in higher education in the United States. The project is a collaboration between the Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy and the Asian/Pacific/American Institute at NYU, and the College Board. The project is primarily informed by a national commission, consisting of K-12 and higher education professionals, policy-makers and public officials, researchers, and leaders of advocacy organizations.

This website introduces the work of CARE and its PROJECT PERSONNEL, and provides an overview of the project's RESEARCH AREAS, PUBLICATIONS and work in POLICY ADVOCACY.

Goals

The project assesses AAPI participation in higher education across various U.S. regions with consideration for the differences in socioeconomic, ethnic, language, and immigration backgrounds within the population. Recognizing that there are a number of unmet and emerging needs to specific AAPI student populations related to post-secondary preparation, choices, and experiences on a national level, the purpose of CARE is to examine:

  1. The impact of stereotypes and perceptions of AAPI students on educational policy, practice, and research.
  2. The intersections of race and ethnicity with class, gender, immigration status, religion and language among the diverse AAPI population.
  3. The ways in which policy and research on AAPIs can be informed by new analytical and conceptual frameworks.

The project, which is one of the largest efforts to examine demographic and educational issues affecting AAPIs in higher education, produces policy reports, manages and makes available national-cross sectional data of indicators of equity, and catalogs literature that can be a resource for the study of the AAPI student population. The activities and deliverables of the project are designed to inform the work of practitioners, scholars, and policy makers related to issues of access and equity in higher education for AAPI students.
